Kursaal and Option Lock

[Original blog post on Tumblr: May 21st, 2015]

Some highlights of the latest two EDAs I’ve read (Kursaal and Option Lock). I intended to put Longest Day in the same post, but it’s already too long, so we’ll save it for another post.

This isn’t exactly a review, more like some sort of retroactive liveblogging, since I took these screens while reading, along with my reactions.

This one feels a bit like a wasted opportunity to reinvent werewolves. It wasn’t a bad read, I liked a lot of the interactions between the characters here, but the plot left a bit to be desired. The fact that this book comes right after one that blew my mind (Alien Bodies) certainly doesn’t help its case, though… 4/10

You are literally building a hotel on top of the remains of a mysterious extinct race. You are the less genre savvy character I’ve encountered in a long, long time. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

Oooooooh, the everlasting matches! Didn’t know they appeared in the books first. Cool.

 “Birth trauma”

Punch this asshole right on his damn nose Sam, this wasn’t funny.

Sam is seriously growing on me and I hope things will continue that way.

Also, “the Doctor studied his socks”.

“SPARE ME THE TECHNOBABBLE”

YES GOOD

LET IT STAY THIS WAY PLEASE

“Yes good²“, the sequel

“Yes good 3”, the vengeance

WELL THAT WAS F█CKING BRUTAL

Oh my god Eight you dork

BEST SCENE IN THE WHOLE BOOK

How many corpses are going to escape before you start to do something about that? I take it back Kadijk is the less genre savvy character in this story

SOMEONE FINALLY SAID WEREWOLVES IT’S ABOUT TIME IT JUST TOOK 140 PAGES THIS IS FAR TOO SLOW

 No comment necessary

You’ve just jumped from the roof of a building and almost dislocated your arms, but it’s “all right”, god damn it Eight

IT TOOK YOU FAR TOO LONG TO REALISE SAM WAS CONTAMINATED BY THE WEREWOLF VIRUS THING YOU GET A F MINUS MINUS ON THIS ONE

I laughed

ADSGFSHFGHDSDFHSHHFFF THAT WAS PAINFUL TO READ

SAM THAT WAS A TERRIBLE PUN AND YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED AND THE WORST THING ABOUT THIS IS THAT IT MADE ME LAUGH ANYWAY

This one is not offensively bad, per say, it’s just very bland most of the time. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I was into espionnage movies and stuff like that, but still. The main characters are reasonably well written, too. The ending is absolutely brutal, though, and it surprised me. 3/10

I really liked Sam in this book, she’s funny without being obnoxious. I hope this trend will continue.

Oh my god

Eight trying to solve a mystery, everyone!

 I’m having school flashbacks

I’d say this isn’t the time for terrible jokes, Sam, but I snorted, so go ahead

 BEST SCENE IN THIS BOOK

ADMIT IT YOU HAVE NO PLAN WHATSOEVER

SAM STOP TRYING TO BE FUNNY WHILE THE THIRD WORLD WAR IS ALMOST HAPPENING

ALSO EIGHT FORGOT HE HAD A F█CKING PLAN

You two were the best thing in that rather bland but surprisingly brutal book, please stay that way even if the next book isn’t that good oops I've already read it, and it’s better.
